Today, looking over Quaker Notes, I choose some that speak to me today:
“Early Friends placed a great emphasis on ‘Living faithfully’, and this is still true today. To live faithfully means that we are true to our own selves, and to the highest and best that we can find within us. This is simple to say, but by no means easy to do. We are all aware of times when we feel that we should take a course of action, but are afraid that it will, for example, make us look foolish to other people. This sort of difficulty can arise many times in the course of an average week. Sometimes we listen, and sometimes we ignore our inner voice.
Sometimes the matter is trivial, and will not effect anyone but ourselves. Sometimes it is more serious, and occasionally it is a life-changing decision. It is human nature to prioritize, and to quickly forget the small occasions. But in fact, these are the training ground, and even here we can learn to draw on help. Help is always there. It is what the religions of the world have called grace, and what George Fox called ‘The Power of the Lord’. It enables us to hold firm, and then, as Shakespeare said, we will not be false to others.”
